Growing Innovation is a documentary about the environmental factors that influence innovation with digital media in academia. Academic research on digital media has existed in various computer science and engineering departments for over 50 years. More recently, academics working in the arts and humanities have also become involved with the development of new types of digital media technologies and digital media content. Many of the academic institutions carrying out this research are now devoting considerable human, technical, and financial resources in pursuit of innovation with digital media, ranging from the creation of digital media art to hardware and software development. The Growing Innovation documentary is based on the notion that academic pursuits in digital media are more likely to succeed when the environmental conditions surrounding academic researchers are appropriate for innovation. Adequate funding, relevant technological resources, and the hiring of talented academics will not necessarily lead to innovation with digital media.

Within the documentary, seven full-time academics and a management consultant--all working with innovation in digital media--respond to questions about the influence of environmental conditions on innovation. The interviewees discuss the differences between innovation and creativity, and how time, the physical environment, interpersonal environment and organizational environment can influence innovation with digital media. The interviewees' expertise includes architecture, computer science, engineering, game design, music, digital media art, and management. The video is primarily intended for academics and academic administrators involved with digital media research.
